The announcement by Sudan’s warring parties that they had agreed to re-establish contact and begin talks on the transitional council have been received with optimism by the United States and the African Union. In a statement issued by Sudan’s Opposition Alliance, the U.S. supports efforts for a transition to civilian government. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed arrived in Khartoum last week on a mediation mission between the Opposition Alliance and the Transitional Military Council. Talks on a transitional council became deadlocked after the two sides disagreed on the composition of the sovereign council that would oversee the transition.
